Delta and\nAmerican on Friday temporarily canceled all of their China flights in response\nto the coronavirus outbreak, becoming the first domestic carriers to make the\nmove.<\/p>\n\n\n

As of\nFriday, the outbreak had infected nearly 10,000 people, most of them in China,\nand killed more than 200, all in China.<\/p>\n\n\n

The U.S.\nState Department late Thursday elevated its China travel advisory to level 4,\nrecommending that Americans do not travel there. That change followed the World\nHealth Organization’s declaration of a global health emergency over\ncoronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n

Tuesday\nWhite House officials said they were considering a China travel ban but said\nthen they had not contacted the airlines. Still, if United, the other U.S.\ncarrier serving China with nonstop flights, follows its rivals’ lead, the need\nfor White House intervention may be moot. United has already reduced its\nscheduled China flights.<\/p>\n\n\n

American Airlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

American\ncited the State Department’s updated travel advisory Friday in suspending its\nU.S.-China routes immediately through March 28. The airline said it would\ncontact the affected customers directly to help them make alternate travel\narrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n

“We\nwill continue to evaluate the schedule for March 28 and beyond and make any\nadjustments as necessary,” the airline said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n

Delta Airlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Atlanta-based\nDelta on Friday said it would suspend its U.S.-China flights from Feb. 6\nthrough April 30.<\/p>\n\n\n

Airlines\nin Europe, Asia and North America are cancelling flights to and from China as\nthe novel coronavirus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has\ninfected at least a few thousand people in China and dozens beyond its borders.<\/p>\n\n\n

Although\nall 171 deaths from the disease have been limited to China, at least 82 people\nacross 18 different countries have tested positive for the mysterious illness,\nprompting governments around the world to issue travel advisories and start\nevacuating their citizens from Wuhan. Chinese authorities have shut down travel\nin and out of Wuhan and enacted similar, strict transportation restrictions in\na number of other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n

The\nmajority of cases outside China are associated with travel to China and of\nthose, the vast majority involve travel to Wuhan, according to the World Health\nOrganization (WHO).<\/p>\n\n\n

Which\nairlines have cancelled flights?<\/p>\n\n\n

British\nAirways cancelled all flights to and from Beijing and Shanghai until at least\nFriday following local authorities\u2019 advice against \u201call but essential travel to\nmainland China.\u201d Flights to and from Hong Kong will remain unaffected, the\nairline said.<\/p>\n\n\n
